No. 25 Texas A&M Defeats No. 19 Oklahoma
Feb 17, 2019 | Women's Tennis
NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 25Texas A&M women's tennis team defeated No. 19 Oklahoma 5-2 Sunday afternoon at the Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion. After the win the Aggies improved to 9-1 on the season while the Sooners fell to 5-2 this spring.
"This was a very decisive win for the Aggies beating a top-20 team indoors on the road really says a lot about our team for a variety of reasons," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "This is definitely Oklahoma's best team in quite some time and we really outplayed them as a group. We played our best doubles point of the year and we got off to a great start in all 6 courts of the singles. We had several things that we challenged the girls with after the tough 4-3 loss to Illinois a few days ago and I couldn't be happier with we responded as a group."
The Maroon & White claimed the doubles point for eighth time in 10 matches this season. The A&M duo of Jayci Goldsmith and Tatiana Makarova, ranked No. 54 in the nation, earned the first win of the day, topping Jasmine Asghar and Ivana Corley 6-3 on court one. The Aggie freshman pair of Renee McBryde and Katya Townsend clinched the point with a 6-4 victory over OU's 51st ranked tandem of Camila Romero and Martina Capurro. The ranked victory for McBryde and Townsend was the first of their collegiate career as they improved to 4-0 overall as a team.
A&M's McBryde continued her stellar play on the road this week, winning her second straight match in straight sets. The Wollongong, Australia native bested OU's Asghar 6-3, 6-1 to put the Aggies ahead 2-0. No. 109 Makarova, an A&M sophomore, defeated OU's Romero 6-2, 6-0 on court three to increase the A&M advantage to 3-0.
Aggie sophomore, Dorthea Faa-Hviding, clinched the win for the Maroon & White with a 6-4, 6-1 win on court six over OU's Laura Rico-Garcia. The clinch victory was the first of the season for Faa-Hviding.
The final point of the day for the Aggies was earned by A&M freshman Jayci Goldsmith on court two. Goldsmith, ranked No. 89, defeated OU's Oleksandra Korashvil, ranked No. 60, 0-6, 7-6(5), 1-0(5) to earn her first ranked singles victory of the season.
OU earned the last two points as Capurro outlasted A&M's Townsend on court one and Kianah Motosono bested A&M's Riley McQuaid on court five.
After returning from the Sooner State, the Aggies begin a four-match home stand with a double header against UTRGV and Abilene Christian on Feb. 23.
