SERIES PREVIEW: UIC
Feb 21, 2019 | Baseball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M Aggies continue their 10-game, season-opening homestand with a three-game series against the UIC Flames beginning Friday. Start times are 6:32, 2:02 and 1:02 p.m.
Every game of the series is available for viewing on SEC Network + with Will Johnson and Mark Johnson on the call. SEC Network + provides digital-only events to SEC Network subscribers through WatchESPN and the ESPN app on smartphones, computers, tablets and connected devices (Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, Xbox 360 and Xbox One). All three games will air on the radio locally. Friday's game will be exclusively on SportsRadio 1550 AM. Saturday and Sunday are on SportsRadio 1150 and/or 102.7 The Zone with Dave South and Scott Clendenin on the call.
The Aggies have been stellar in February the last six seasons, logging a 46-3 mark the opening month since 2014, including 9-0 in 2018. Texas A&M has won their last 16 February contests.
Texas A&M is 82-4 in regular-season non-conference home games since 2015, including 19-1 in 2018.
Aggies' Friday starter John Doxakis earned a pair of awards the opening weekend, picking up SEC Pitcher of the Week and Golden Spikes Award Performance of the Week. He stymied Fordham, allowing just one hit while striking out a career-high tying 12 over 7.0 scoreless innings.
The Maroon & White hold a 6-1 edge against the Flames with all the games played at Olsen Field. Texas A&M overwhelmed the Flames in their first meeting, a 15-1 victory at the 2008 NCAA College Station Regional. The teams met up for three-game series in 2012 and 2013. In 2012, the Aggies swept the Flames, outscoring UIC by a combined margin of 26-2. In 2013, the Aggies took two of the three games. UIC claimed the opener 2-0, but the Maroon & White responded with victories by scores of 4-3 and 5-1.
The Flames stumbled out of the gate this season, going 0-3 with losses at Georgia Tech (6-3), Kennesaw State (9-2) and Georgia State (9-5). UIC batted just .153 on the opening weekend. Matt Botcher (.300) and Thomas Smart (.300) were the top hitters. The pitching staff notched a 6.75 ERA with a .343 opponent batting average.
