COLLEGE STATION, Texas – No. 24 Texas A&M women's tennis hosts instate foe, SMU, noon Wednesday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in their final tune up before beginning SEC play this weekend.
"SMU has a very strong team this year as it showed in their upset of No. 17 USC a few weeks ago," Texas A&M women's tennis head coach Mark Weaver said. "Their 4-6 record is very deceiving with five of their losses being 4-3 results. We are ready for a battle and looking to continue playing at a high level that we have been able to so far this season."
The Maroon & White look to open the season with 12 wins in their first 13 matches for the first time since the 2013 season. The Aggies look to match the 2012 and 2013 squads for the best 13-match stretch to open a season in program history, the '13 team raced out to a 15-1 mark before falling in the NCAA Championship Finals.
The Aggies swept UTRGV and Abilene Christian last Saturday to win their third straight and improve to 11-1 this spring. The Maroon & White dropped just one set across the 12 singles matches against the Vaqueros and Wildcats. SMU (4-6) has dropped three straight matches coming into Wednesday's match. The Mustangs' Anzhelika Shapovalova brings a team-best 9-1 dual match record to College Station, while senior Liza Buss is ranked No. 90 nationally and senior Vivienne Kulicke is ranked No. 117.
A&M's Jayci Goldsmith, a freshman from Dripping Springs, Texas, earned the highest ranking for the Aggies in the Feb. 20 edition of the Oracle/ITA Division I National Singles Rankings. The lefthander inched up three spots to No. 86 as she stands at 9-1 this spring and 18-3 overall. Townsend and McBryde are the lone ranked doubles team for the Aggies, entering the rankings at No. 52 after earning the Aggies' first ranked doubles win of the season at Oklahoma.
A&M has posted a 58-9 singles record and 22-4 doubles mark in dual matches this spring. Faa-Hviding has a team-high seven match win streak while sophomore Riley McQuaid has won 13 of her last 14 matches.
The Aggies kickoff SEC matches this weekend as they host No. 34 Auburn on March 1 at 6 p.m. to open league play followed by a Sunday date against Alabama on March 3 at noon.
