No. 4 South Carolina Defeats No. 12 Texas A&M
Mar 29, 2019 | Women's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION – The No. 12 Texas A&M women's tennis team dropped a 4-0 match to No. 4 South Carolina Friday evening at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. With the loss the Aggies fell to 18-4 on the year and 6-3 in SEC play while the Gamecocks improved to 13-3 overall and 8-1 against the league.
A&M dropped a tightly contested doubles point to open the match, falling on courts one and three. The Aggies earned the first doubles win of the night as No. 55 Renee McBryde and Katya Townsend defeated USC's Rachel Rohrabacher and Paige Cline 6-3 on court two. USC picked up wins on court three by Kennedy Wicker and Megan Davies followed by No. 1 Mia Horvit and Ingrid Gamarra Martins on court one to secure the match's first point.
The Aggies looked to take the momentum in the match as they claimed four first sets, but were unable to earn second-set victories to put themselves in position for the upset. No. 7 Gamarra Martins of South Carolina topped A&M's Townsend on court one followed by Davies win on court three over McBryde to make the score 3-0. Needing to sweep the remaining matches, the Aggies fought in third sets on a trio of courts before South Carolina clinched the win on court five by Silvia Chinellato over A&M's Riley McQuaid.
A&M hosts its final match of the regular season at the Mitchell Tennis Center against Florida on Sunday at noon (CT) before taking to the road for the final three regular season matches at No. 23 LSU, Mississippi State and Ole Miss.

On Friday's match…
"This was a high level tennis match. I knew going into the match that South Carolina was really good in doubles and we just let that first point get away. They played a great match at three doubles, but we were excellent at two doubles. We had a little bit of bad luck on court one when we could have evened the match at four-all. Unfortunately in competition, like life, things don't always go the way you want them to. We got an unlucky break there that might have cost us that doubles point, but we need to be tougher than that. Then in singles we were able to get four first sets, but to their credit they were able to turn that. We responded how we needed to in singles, but they raised their game to the next level. All credit to them, they have a very fine team."
On playing Florida on Sunday…
"I'm looking forward to some short term memory with a quick turn around on Sunday as we take on a quality Florida team. These matches in the SEC are battles and it is all about how you respond from those Friday night matches headed into Sunday. We have talked a lot about adversity all season, we had a tough loss on a Friday earlier this season at Illinois and bounced back with one of our best wins at Oklahoma a couple days later. Florida has a very good team and we need to come out and play high level tennis and sharpen up a couple things."
