COLLEGE STATION – The No. 12 Texas A&M women's tennis team their regular season home slate of SEC matches on Sunday against Florida at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center at noon (CT). The Aggies (18-4, 6-3) are looking to maintain a stronghold on fourth place in the SEC standings as trio of teams are within a match including the Gators (8-8, 5-4).
"Florida is one of the premier programs in the country which brings and lot of fun and excitement to the match for our group," Texas A&M women's tennis head coach Mark Weaver said. "We are looking forward to the challenge and having a nice bounce back from Friday. Our group has responded well this season when we have come off of some tough matches and I expect nothing less than the same response tomorrow."
Winners of four of their last five matches, the Aggies have defeated then-No. 4 Vanderbilt, then-No. 21 Kentucky, Missouri and Arkansas in the last two weeks before falling to No. 4 South Carolina on Friday night. The Aggies were spurred to victory behind the impressive play from No. 50 Katya Townsend, for her efforts she was tabbed as the SEC Player of the Week two weeks ago after earning the highest ranked win by a freshman in program history. This past week, freshman Renee McBryde went 2-0 in singles and doubles matches to earn SEC Freshman of the Week honors.
A&M has posted an astonishing 86-25 singles record and 36-14 doubles mark in dual matches this spring. The depth on the A&M roster is unparalleled in the league, the Aggies are the only team in the SEC that has seven players with at least 10 dual wins, the next closest is Kentucky with six players with double digit victories.
Texas A&M is by far the youngest team in the country with five freshman and three sophomores. The freshman class was ranked as the No. 2 recruiting class last spring, the Aggies were one of only two schools to sign multiple blue chip recruits signing three vs Stanford's two.
All three of A&M's doubles teams are ranked nationally, one of only three schools in the country to have all three of their doubles teams ranked. Highlighted by the No. 1 doubles team of Jayci Goldsmith and Tatiana Makarova, ranked No. 63, the duo have gone 12-6 on the top doubles court. A&M's pair of Townsend and McBryde moved to No. 55 after going 3-0 against ranked pairs this spring.
A&M Sophomore Riley McQuaid has been nearly unbeatable this spring, going 16-2 in dual matches and 5-1 in league play. McQuaid's 16 dual wins leads the SEC and surpass her team leading total of 15 dual victories a season ago.
The Aggies take to the road for the final three regular season matches at No. 23 LSU, Mississippi State and Ole Miss over the next two weekend before returning to College Station to host the SEC Tournament, April 17-21.
