No. 2 Aggies Kick Off Spring Season in San Diego
Jan 12, 2024 | Women's Tennis
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The No. 2 Texas A&M women's tennis team opens its spring slate with a pair of matches versus San Diego and No. 4 Stanford at the Hogan Tennis Center, Jan. 13 and -14, respectively, with both matches starting at 2 p.m. CT.
The Maroon & White look to carry over their strong performance from the 2023 campaign, where they held a 30-3 record on their way to a second-consecutive SEC regular season title and Elite 8 trip. A&M will face the Toreros and Cardinal to establish their 2024 season.
"The team is looking really good," head coach Mark Weaver said. "We're excited to open the season versus two very good teams. We play San Diego on the 13th, they advanced to the National Indoors last season, and we played a tough match with them. We then follow up with Stanford on the 14th who are another great team, so it will be a great way to start off the season.
A&M will face San Diego for the second straight season, after dominating the Toreros at the ITA National Indoor Championship, where the Aggies swept the match to advance to the quarterfinals.
The following day, A&M plays the rematch fixture from last season's NCAA Elite 8 matchup versus No. 4 Stanford. This will be the fourth all-time meeting between the Aggies and Cardinal, with Stanford holding a 3-0 record over the Maroon & White.
Leading the Aggies into battle is the No. 1 player in the country and reigning ITA Fall Championship winner Mary Stoiana. The Maroon & White also boast another two ranked singles players in No. 26 Mia Kupres and No. 31 Nicole Khirin. Stoiana and Kupres also garnered the No. 3 ranking in doubles following a 6-1 start to the year as a pair.
