Feb 16, 2024 | Baseball
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Behind five home runs and a strong pitching performance from Ryan Prager, the No. 7 Texas A&M baseball team rolled past McNeese, 15-0, to open the 2024 season Friday night from Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
Friday's shutout marked the first on Opening Day for the Aggies since 2019, when the Maroon & White blanked Fordham 4-0.
After missing all of last season with an injury, Prager took the ball for the first time in 604 days and delivered five shutout innings to go along with a career-high nine strikeouts to earn the win. In relief, Isaac Morton struck out four in two scoreless frames and Brad Rudis finished off the night with a pair of shutout innings.
Offensively, nine different Aggies recorded a hit led by newcomer Ted Burton's 3-for-4 performance. The Michigan transfer also plated three RBI in his Maroon & White debut. Unanimous Preseason All-American Jace LaViolette topped the squad with four RBI to go along with a pair of home runs, marking his fifth career multi-homer performance. In his collegiate debut, College Station native Blake Binderup went 3-for-6 and plated three RBI.
In his first career at-bat as an Aggie, Stanford transfer Braden Montgomery ripped a line-drive homer to right-center to open the scoring in the first.
After Jackson Appel led off the third with a walk, LaViolette cranked his first homer of the season to extend the lead to 3-0. The sophomore's first home run of the 2024 campaign left the bat at 114 mph and traveled 419 feet.
Later in the frame, Burton brought home the Maroon & White's fourth run of the night on an RBI single through the left side. Following a Targac walk, Binderup pushed the lead to 6-0 on a two-run single to left-center.
The Aggies put together another five-run inning in the fifth, jumpstarted by a second two-run LaViolette blast. After Montgomery drew a walk and advanced to second on a Hayden Schott single, freshman Gavin Grahovac came through with his first collegiate hit and RBI. Burton rounded out the five-run fifth with a two-run triple down the right field line.
Texas A&M tacked on four more runs in the ninth to make the final, 15-0. Binderup and Ali Camarillo opened the frame with back-to-back home runs and freshmen Caden Sorrell and Jack Bell each registered an RBI to cap off the scoring for the night.
