Apr 12, 2024 | Women's Tennis
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 11 Texas A&M women's tennis team secured its 11th conference victory and 52nd consecutive home win against No. 14 Auburn, 6-1, at the Mitchell Tennis Center Friday night.
Auburn (14-9, 8-4 SEC) claimed an early lead after taking the doubles point, but Texas A&M (19-6, 11-1 SEC) responded quickly in singles play and never looked back. No. 19 Nicole Khirin struck the first blow for the Aggies, taking down No. 54 DJ Bennett on court 2 (6-2, 6-0) to pick up her 18th dual match singles win of the season and tie things up.
Following Khirin's lead, No. 1 Mary Stoiana dominated No. 6 Carolyn Ansari (6-1, 6-2) on court 1 to claim the 100thsingles victory of her career and extend her win-streak to seven to put the Aggies on top, 2-1.
Jeanette Mireles joined the party to give the Maroon & White point number three, defeating Adeline Flach on court 3 (6-3, 7-5) after battling back from a 2-5 deficit in the second set for her ninth SEC singles victory and fourth in a row.
Daria Smetannikov clinched the Aggies' seventh-straight victory after taking out Ali DeSpain on court 6 in straight sets (6-4, 7-5) to pick up her fourth consecutive victory in SEC play.
The Maroon & White secured the singles sweep with two more victories after the match result was sealed. No. 44 Mia Kupres added A&M's fifth point after taking out No. 71 Ariana Arsenault on court 3 (1-6, 7-6(1), 6-0) and Lucciana Perez edged out Angella Okutoyl on court 4 (6-3, 5-7, 6-3) to grab the final point of the night.
COACH'S QUOTES
Head coach Mark Weaver on the team's performance ...
"Doubles was a tough one tonight, I give them a lot of credit, they really came out fired up and ready to go. We don't like people coming into our courts and taking it to us in doubles. We are going to take that a little personal and come out sharp in our doubles practice and then come out sharp on Sunday.
"It was a great bounce back that we had in singles, great composure. Auburn is one of the best teams in the nation and we took it to them pretty good in all six matches tonight. I'm pretty pleased with how we played. There has been a lot of pressure on the team, they are thinking about an SEC title and stuff, but I thought after losing the double point we all responded well and kept our composure in singles. I'm glad we closed it out the way that we did. It's hard to believe that Sunday is Senior Day and the last regular season home match of the year. We are going to come out strong and make our seniors proud on Sunday."
