Aggies Win Austin Super Regional Opener, 6-5, Cannon Blasts Two Home Runs
May 24, 2024 | Softball
AUSTIN – Trinity Cannon drove in five runs courtesy of a pair of home runs as the national No. 16 seeded Texas A&M softball team beat top-seeded Texas, 6-5, in the Austin Super Regional opener, Friday night at Red & Charline McCombs Field.
Texas A&M (44-13) jumped on the Longhorns early as Kennedy Powell and Koko Wooley strung together back-to-back hits to start the game with runners in scoring position. After a triple play was overturned to a foul ball following review, Trinity Cannon gave the Aggies an early lead with a three-run home run. Aggie starter Emiley Kennedy sat the Longhorns down in order in the bottom half, including her first strikeout of the game.
Texas (50-8) threatened in the second inning loading the bases after a pair of singles and a walk, before a put out at home and a swinging strikeout stranded three Longhorns. The teams traded scoreless innings before Ol' Sarge's charges extended the lead to 5-0 after Cannon fired her second round tripper of the night. The Aggies tacked on another run in the sixth with a two-out double from Kramer Eschete to score Hailey Golden from first.
The Longhorns nearly erased a six-run deficit with four runs in the fourth and another in the seventh, before Kennedy struck out the final batter to give the Aggies a 1-0 advantage in the super regional.
Kennedy struck out five batters and went the distance for the 24th time this season to earn win No. 24, the most wins by an Aggie pitcher since Samantha Show had 25 in 2016.
