Scott’s School Record Highlights Opening Day of Tiger Paw Invitational

CLEMSON – Texas A&M's Ja'Qualon Scott downed his own 60m hurdles school record on the opening day of the Tiger Paw Invitational Friday at the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex.
The Aggies' opening day was highlighted by Scott's record-breaking performance, as the team also secured an event win in the men's mile, three all-time marks and seven personal-best performances.
In a battle with himself at the top of the history books, Scott shattered his own 60m hurdles school record in the semifinals of the event crossing the line in 7.55 which also captures the No. 4 spot in the country this year. The junior ended his day in the semifinals and did not start the final. Jaiya Covington in the women's event continued to be a model of consistency, recording a pair of 8.01 times in the semifinals and final to finish as the top collegiate and second overall in the event.
The men's mile group swept the podium spots in the event, as Gilbert Rono spearheaded the Maroon & White with a personal-best time of 4:02.01 to win the race. Rono's mark also moved him up three spots on the A&M all-time performers list to No. 7. Ondrej Gajdoš placed second with a career-best mark of 4:02.32, while Diego Heredia was third in 4:05.23.
On the women's side of the mile, Debora Cherono ran the second-fastest time in school history behind only her own school record. She crossed the line in 4:38.57 to place fourth overall in the event. Elise Smoot also logged a seventh-place finish with a personal-best time of 4:47.06 to climb a spot in the history books to No. 5.
Jermaisha Arnold continued her impressive showings in the 400m, as she finished third overall and second among collegiates tying her season-best time of 51.86. On the men's side of the 400m, Auhmad Robinson finished as the top collegiate and fourth overall with a time of 45.61, while Antonie Nortje was second among collegiates and sixth overall with a personal-best time of 45.89.
In the field, Heather Abadie recorded a podium finish in the pole vault placing third with a mark of 4.14m/13-7. Mason Mangum had an impressive performance finishing fifth overall and second among collegiates in the long jump with a leap of 7.78m/25-6.25.
The 60m groups both claimed semifinal finishers, as Bria Bullard and Camryn Dickson placed 13th (7.33) and 14th (7.35), respectively, while DeVante Mount tied his personal-best time of 6.67 for 16th in the men's event.
