Feb 22, 2025 | Men's Tennis
WACO – The No. 9 Texas A&M men's tennis team took down the No. 67 LSU Tigers, 4-1, to open SEC action at the Hurd Tennis Center on the Baylor campus on Saturday. The match was moved from College Station due to inclement weather.
Texas A&M (6-3) started the day strong against LSU (7-4), with JC Roddick and Lathan Skrobarcek making quick work on court 2 against Sasa Markovic and Andrej Loncarevic, 6-2. The Tigers No. 27 duo Julien Penzlin and Aleksi Lofman then moved on to claim court 1. It all came down to Ritesh Patil and Tiago Pires in a thrilling match to seven, coming out with the win, 7-5, and giving the Aggies the all-important doubles point.
Freshman Theo Papamalamis quickly dominated court 1 against Sasa Markovic, 6-1, 6-4, to start singles action. LSU responded with its only point of the day on court 3.
Senior JC Roddick opened with a strong first set against Alessio Vasquez, 6-2. After starting the second set behind, Roddick made a comeback to force a tiebreaker and come out with the win, 6-2, 7-6 (1).
Tiago Pires provided the winning margin for the Aggies, splitting the first two sets and coming back with a vengeance in the third to defeat Aleksi Lofman, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.

COACH'S QUOTES
Head coach Steve Denton on the adaptability of the team…
"I thought today was a very difficult day for both teams. This was our first conference match at home, with both teams uncertain about the time or place of the match. I thought with all the twists and turns our guys were a bit lethargic in the warm-up, but our senior leadership along with our coaching staff did a great job of motivating our players."
Denton on Skrobarcek and Salvestre's first action of the season…
"There were a few firsts today. I thought Lathan did a great job in the doubles today in his first action this season. We got Damien cleared to play and it was exciting seeing him out there against one of LSU's most confident players."
Denton on the mindset heading into tomorrow…
"We were able to turn a couple of these matches around today in our favor. This was a typical SEC tussle against a very good and dangerous team. We are happy to get out of there with the win, but we have to focus our attention on a very tough, veteran Florida State team."
