No. 12 Aggies Claim Nailbiter Against No. 26 Sooners
Mar 02, 2025 | Men's Tennis
NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 12 Texas A&M men's tennis team claimed a back-and-forth tussle against the No. 26 Oklahoma Sooners, 4-3, at the Headington Family Tennis Center on Sunday.
Junior Togan Tokac clinched the victory for the Aggies, giving Oklahoma its first conference loss, after being the only court to go into a three-set battle. After splitting the first two sets, with all eyes on court 5, Tokac performed under pressure on the Sooners' home court, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.
Texas A&M (8-5, 2-1 SEC) started slow against conference opponent Oklahoma (9-3, 2-1 SEC), losing both courts 1 and 2 to drop the doubles point to start the match.
The Maroon & White were fueled from its previous loss against Arkansas, using that to fuel singles action. Striking first was graduate Matthis Ross, defeating Alejandro Melero on court 6, 7-5, 6-3, to tie up the score one all.
In his second match donning the Maroon & White, Alan Magadan came back after a 1-4 deficit on court 2 against Kholo Montsiin in the second set to claim the Aggies second point of the day to put them at an advantage, 6-4, 6-4. Oklahoma responded with two back-to-back wins on court 4 and 1.
Sophomore Tiago Pires extended his winning streak to five, staying undefeated in conference play. After a dominating start to the first set that left him up 3-0, Luis Carlos Alvarez Valdes fought back to force a tiebreaker. Pires dug deep to dominate in the tiebreaker, only giving up two points. He kept the momentum to tie the Aggies back up 3-3 after a 7-6(2), 6-3, victory on court 3.

Coach's Quotes
Head coach Steve Denton on the response of the team after the loss to Arkansas…
"I thought that after the Arkansas match on Friday night and losing the doubles point today, our guys showed a lot of resolve and fight. They crawled their way back in the match."
Denton on the singles wins from today…
"There were some strong performances from our guys in singles. Our guys were refusing to give in today and kept fighting. It started down there with Matt Ross on court 6. He was able to equalize the doubles point. I am happy for Tiago to get another win and to continue to gain momentum. Alan was able to come through for us at number two. Togan, with all the pressure on, came up with some really good tennis there in the third set to get us the win."
Denton on looking forward to the next two weeks of action at home..
"For me, the team needed that match to seize the momentum again and to feel good about themselves as we get back home and get ready to play some really tough teams."
