No. 2 Aggies Took Down Quinnipiac to Advance to NCAA Second Round
May 02, 2025 | Women's Tennis
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 2 Texas A&M women's tennis team defeated Quinnipiac in dominating fashion, 4-0, Friday in NCAA Tournament first round action at Mitchell Tennis Center.
The Aggies face UCSB in round two Saturday at 4 p.m.
Coming into doubles, newly paired Mary Stoiana/Mia Kupres earned a 6-2 decision over Willow Renton/Caitlin Flower on court 1. Closing out the doubles point, Nicole Khirin/Lucciana Perez took down Jordan Bradley/Caroline Schulson, 6-0, on court 3, giving the Aggies a 1-0 lead.
Starting in singles, No. 67 Kupres defeated Anagha Shankar on court 3, 6-0, 6-1, for a 2-0 advantage.
No. 109 Smetannikov claimed court 5 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ella Lewis to bring the Aggies within a point of advancing to the second round.
No. 1 ITA ranked Stoiana triumphed over Renton, 6-1, 6-1, on court 1 to send the Bobcats home and give the Maroon & White their 69th-consecutive win at Mitchell.
This marks the 13th-straight year the Aggies have advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Head Coach Mark Weaver
Tournament play so far…
"Overall I'm pleased with the day, NCAA tournaments regardless of who you play always have first-round jitters. We worked with it all, we had scheduling changes for the weather, we handled it well. Very hot humid day, I was very pleased with the business like performance, we need to rest up, tomorrow will be a battle."
Mia and Mary playing doubles together…
"Mary and Mia are a great team, they have played together for years, and definitely had a rocky start, but their opponents played quite well today. For doubles if you do not come out ready to go it can get tricky, we turned the 2-1 game around and go our feet underneath us."
