Aug 20, 2025 | Soccer
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Trinity Buchanan once again stepped up late for the Aggies connecting on the game-tying goal in the 81st minute as the Texas A&M soccer team finished the match against Texas State locked in a 1-1 stalemate Wednesday evening at Ellis Field.
Sydney Fuller in the 7th minute had a brilliant save on Chloe Jones' strike from 17 yards out. Fuller leaped and got just enough of the ball to tip it over the crossbar, denying the Bobcats a dangerous early chance.
Texas State (2-0-1) struck first in the 27th minute after Helen Alormenu was fouled 19 yards out. Alormenu bent the free kick over the keeper's head to give the Bobcats a 1–0 lead.
Texas A&M (1-0-2) had a chance to answer in the 38th minute when Savannah Hutchins delivered a well-placed cross to Bella James, whose header narrowly missed and deflected into the side netting leaving the first half to the Bobcats.
The Aggies nearly found the equalizer in the 61st minute as Leah Diaz dribbled through traffic and ripped a shot from 10 yards out toward the bottom left corner, but Brooklyn Escobar laid out for a save.
The Maroon & White finally broke through in the 81st minute when Diaz chased down the ball from Hattie Patterson near the endline on the left side and crossed it to the middle for Trinity Buchanan to finish from 10 yards out. Buchanan has now scored in back-to-back matches, once again delivering in the clutch.

On her goal to tie the game …
[Leah Diaz's] cross was fantastic and really gritty, she's a gritty player. We need players like Leah Diaz, being willing to put their body on the line. The ball was looking like it was going to go out, but she knew and had faith that she was going to play it in the box. She found that right opportunity. Having that mindset of trying to get the ball in the box and looking to see who else is in there, I just think that we have a really good connection and I appreciate her having faith in me to put the ball in the back of the net.

On setting up her teammates …
I feel like I have a high IQ and I just try to read plays, but it's just more of a connection with my teammates. Whenever I see their heads up, if there's not another player checking to the ball I just read that as my cue to drop in. I feel like I'm a player that can take players on and create plays and I know my teammates and I will be on the same level and they will begin making runs for me and that's when we just start connecting better.

Thoughts on the game …
I was really pleased that we came back, again, and got a late goal, again. That's a testament to the fitness of this team, that's something we were missing a bit these last couple years, and we put a real concerted effort into going out and making sure that our players were going to be fit enough to play in this weather on two days' rest. Hats off to our strength & conditioning coach Gerald Pena, he's been awesome and I told him after that he's the reason we were able to run them down at the end.
You have to love the heart of the team. They don't give up. We took 16 shots, we missed the goal nine times, so that's something we have got to clean up. But the fact that we just kept coming and coming and coming says something.
