Pryor Leads Aggies Past Florida, 74-66, For First SEC Win

GAINESVILLE – The Texas A&M women's basketball team defeated Florida, 74-66, at Exactech Arena Thursday night behind Ny'Ceara Pryor's 18 points, 12 assists, six steals and five rebounds.
On the heels of a tough overtime loss at Georgia, Texas A&M (8-4, 1-2 SEC) capitalized on an early double-digit lead behind Pryor and Fatmata Janneh who scored a season-high 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds. The Maroon & White defense held the nation's fourth leading scorer in Florida's (12-6, 0-3 SEC) Liv McGill to just 16 points on 18 shots. McGill was averaging 24.5 points per game heading into Thursday's contest.
The Aggies were hitting on all cylinders in the first quarter, shooting 64.7% (11-of-15) from the field, including four triples, and taking a double-digit advantage into the second quarter, 26-16. The Texas A&M defense held the Gators to zero made field goals for the final 6:37 of the first frame. Pryor and Janneh dominated in opening quarter, with Janneh scoring nine points and Pryor dishing out six dimes. However, the pair picked up two fouls each in the first 10 minutes.
The Maroon & White and UF played to a stalemate in the second quarter, which benefited the Aggies as they retained their 10-point lead going into the locker room, 39-29. Pryor finished the half with eight points, seven assists and two steals despite the two early fouls. Pitching in huge minutes was Pien Steenbergen who scored eight points in 10 minutes of action during the first half.
The Aggies and Gators traded blows to open the second half and UF cut its deficit to just four with 4:06 left in the third. Texas A&M responded with a 6-0 run and ultimately went into the fourth period up 56-47.
The fourth quarter turned into a free-throw shooting contest down the stretch, where the Aggies hit 10-of-14 shots from the charity stripe to keep UF at bay. Texas A&M won 74-66 to earn its first SEC win of the year.
Texas A&M returns to the hardwood at Reed Arena Sunday to take on No. 7 Vanderbilt at 2 p.m.
