COLLEGE STATION- The No. 16 Texas A&M women's soccer team shut out Mississippi State at Ellis Field on Friday, picking up a 4-0 win that extended the Aggies' home unbeaten streak to 15 games.
The Aggies (10-3-0, 3-2-0 SEC) had four goals from four different players on Friday, and held Mississippi State (3-6-3, 1-2-2) to just one shot on goal.
Mia Hummel made her second career start in goal for the Aggies, and picked her first career shutout and win. Hummel only had to make one save on the game, but helped shut down Mississippi State's attacks by controlling the box and intercepting several Bulldog crosses.
McKayla Paulson opened the scoring in the 12th minute, knocking in a ball that Mississippi State failed to clear after a Haley Pounds corner kick, good for her third goal of the season.
The scoresheet remained unaltered until the 56th minute, when Brittany Crabtree scored her second goal of the season, putting back a Stephanie Malherbe shot that rattled the crossbar.
A&M would strike again just over 10 minutes later, when Haley Pounds headed in a Karlie Mueller cross in the 66th minute, good for her ninth goal of the season.
Janae Cousineau put an exclamation point on the game for Texas A&M with a goal in the 89th minute, as she nudged a Mueller free kick past Mississippi State keeper Tanya de Souza for her fourth goal of the season, and put the Aggies ahead by the final score of 4-0.
Mueller's two assists give her three on the season.
The Aggies out-shot Mississippi State 16 to 5, and had six of the game's seven corner kicks. Mississippi State racked up four yellow cards in the second half.
Texas A&M is now 7-0-0 at home this season, with three regular season home games remaining.
The Aggies return to action on Friday, October 9 at 7 p.m. to host Alabama. Coverage of that game is on SEC Network Plus.
POSTGAME QUOTES
Texas A&M Head Coach G Guerrieri
On tonight's win against Mississippi State…
"I thought it was exactly the kind of response you'd want for a championship team to have. We're the back to back defending champions. To come out and be able to answer the call from the get go, and set the pace and style of game we wanted to play was really good. We knew Mississippi State was going to be very physical, adding some chaotic moments to it. I thought our players dealt with that very well. I was very pleased with Mia Hummel and the defense getting a shutout"
On Mississippi's performance…
"They're unbeaten in the SEC in their last three games. They drew a very good Missouri team. They shut out a Tennessee team that has had good results this year. They beat Arkansas in Arkansas. That's never an easy thing to do. You have to give them credit for having a turnaround year for themselves. You have to give it to our players for showing the difference in what our program and team is about."
On Senior Night…
"For Karlie Mueller to be involved in some of the goals and for Janae Cousineau to get the fourth goal was the cherry on top for a really good win for senior night. I think we've been pretty good over the years on senior night, but there's nothing like coming out and seeing the seniors really beign lifted by their teammates. That's what we saw tonight."
Sophomore Defender McKayla Paulson
On what she saw on her goal…
"We talk about inches. On corners for attacking and defending every inch matters. That was a pure effort goal. It was for whoever got there first. I saw the ball and decided to get a foot on that."
On how important this game was…
"It was very important especially after last week. We needed to make a point in this game and show the team we aren't messing around. We needed to show who the real Texas A&M is."
