Aggies Drop 2-1 Decision at Georgia
Sep 27, 2015 | Soccer
ATHENS, Georgia – The No. 4 Texas A&M Aggies were doomed by a pair of converted Georgia corner kicks as the Bulldogs scored a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon at UGA Soccer Stadium.
The Maroon and White were unable to convert advantages in shots (21-13) and corner kicks (7-5) as the Aggies fell to 9-3-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the SEC. The loss, coupled with Thursday's 2-1 defeat at South Carolina, marked the first time A&M has lost back-to-back SEC games and the first time they've dropped two consecutive league games since 2008.
Texas A&M threw offensive numbers forward in the second half in an attempt to erase a 2-0 halftime deficit, but the Aggies were only able produce one goal on their 11 shots and three corner kicks in the half.
Following the clear of a Karlie Mueller free kick from 18 yards, the carom came back to Haley Pounds who connected on a shot from eight yards out for her eighth goal of the season.
The Aggies were poised to knot the game in the 67th minute when Ashlynn Harryman unleashed a shot from eight yards out on the left, but Georgia goalkeeper Louise Hogrell was able to punch the ball over the crossbar for the save. Hogrell made spectacular save in the 85th minute on Mikaela Harvey's shot from 20 yards out to keep the equalizer off the board.
The Aggies had a flurry of corner kick opportunities in the first two minutes of the contest, but were only able to get one shot off on the four chances with Hogrell saving a shot by Ally Watt.
In the 12th minute Crabtree had a shot from eight yards out, but her shot was two feet wide to the left.
The Bulldogs broke the scoring seal in the 26th minute. Lauren Tanner sent a corner kick in from the left arc to the far post. Aggie defender Grace Wright was at the far post to keep the bender from going in the net, but the deflection went to the foot of Marion Crowder who sent it home for the 1-0 lead.
Georgia (2-7-1, 1-3-0 SEC) their second goal in the 34th minute. This time Crowder sent the corner in from the right arc to the near post, where Caroline Waters was able to knock a header between the post and Aggie goalkeeper Mia Hummel.
Making her first career start, Hummel made six saves on the afternoon. Hogrell also made six saves for Georgia.
The Aggies return to action Friday when they host the Mississippi State Bulldogs in a 7 pm contest at Ellis Field.
TEXAS A&M QUOTES
Head Coach G Guerrieri
On the match: It's a disappointing weekend. Our fight in the second half today was admirable, but we need to fight like that for 90 minutes. Georgia did a good job in converting their two chances in the first half and we weren't good enough in converting the dozen or so chances that we had throughout the match.
On returning to Ellis Field: It will be good to get home. The coaching staff is looking forward to the chance to train at home. We have a lot of improvement to make and a lot of things we can take from this weekend to teach the squad. This is a young team with a lot of potential for growth and the enthusiasm they have to play at Ellis Field is something we can capitalize on.
