Oct 30, 2017 | Soccer
ORANGE BEACH, Alabama – After coming up one point shy of their third SEC regular-season title, the No. 14 Texas A&M Aggies will search for glory at the SEC Tournament beginning with a quarterfinal match against the Missouri Tigers Tuesday at 12:05 p.m. at the Orange Beach Sportsplex. The Maroon & White will be looking for their third SEC Tournament crown to go with the titles they won in 2013 and 2014. The Aggies enter action on a 10-match win streak, tied for the third longest in school annals.
A win Tuesday would give the Aggies an 11-game win streak, matching the second longest in school annals. The school record is 13 consecutive wins encompassing the last 10 games of the 1994 season and the first three games of the 1995 campaign. Texas A&M won 11 consecutive games in 2001 and strung together 10-game win streaks in 1995, 2006 and 2007.
Texas A&M has been dominant in the second half and overtime of matches, outscoring opponents 21-6 after halftime. The margin includes 19-6 in the second half and 2-0 in overtime periods.
The Aggies are 10-3 (.769) all-time in the SEC Tournament. Texas A&M has advanced to the championship match in three of the five seasons they've been in the league, including winning titles in 2013 and 2014.
Texas A&M has allowed just eight goals in 13 matches at the SEC Tournament. The Maroon and White have eight shutouts, including a tournament record five consecutive blankings between 2013-14. The Aggies have recorded at least one shutout in all five of their trips to the SEC Tournament. In 2014, Texas A&M posted three shutouts, toppling Georgia (3-0), South Carolina (1-0) and Kentucky (1-0) by the combined 5-0 margin.
The Aggies are 16-5-3 all-time against Missouri with the 24 meetings the most for Texas A&M against any opponent. The 24 meetings equals the number of times the Maroon & White have faced Texas.
This season, the Aggies toppled Missouri 5-1 in Columbia, including scoring three goals in the final 33 minutes while playing down a player. Haley Pounds scored a pair of goals, Ally Watt added one goal and two assists. Mikaela Harvey and Cienna Arrieta both scored a goal and Addie McCain notched two assists.
The last team to gain entry into the tournament, the Tigers needed the Aggies to topple Mississippi State in the regular-season finale to earn the No. 10 seed. Missouri ended the regular-season 7-11-1 overall and 3-7-0 in the SEC.
The Tigers beat Alabama in the first round, 3-1, with goals by Savannah Trujillo, Sarah Luebbert and Grace Kitts. Trujillo's goal came 47 seconds into the match and Missouri would add goals in the 27th and 57th minutes.
The winner of Tuesday's match will face either No. 3 seed Florida or No. 6 seed Auburn in a 6:05 p.m. match Thursday at Orange Beach Sportsplex.
