COLLEGE STATION – The No. 2 Texas A&M equestrian team dropped No. 3 Auburn, 9-9 (1520-1335.50), in a tiebreaker Friday at the Hildebrand Equine Complex.
"This was a big win for us. It came down to the wire like it has a number of times between us and Auburn, so I expected nothing less," head coach Tana McKay said. "They were great competitors. We made a couple of mistakes, but overall as a whole, the team pulled each other up like they are supposed to. It worked out in our favor."
The Aggies (6-1, 2-1 SEC) topped the Tigers (2-1, 0-1 SEC), 3-2, in the day's first event, Equitation over Fences. Caroline Dance tallied the first point for Texas A&M after defeating Alex Ladove, 84-77. Dance was awarded her first career MOP for her efforts. Rachael Hake outscored Ashton Alexander, 82-81, before Alex Desiderio concluded the event with a 77-72 win over Caitlin Boyle.
In Horsemanship, the Aggies extended their lead to 7-3 at the halfway point after taking the event, 4-1. The Maroon & White won four consecutive points with Alex Albright leading the way with her 71.5-70.5 victory over Lauren Diaz. Bailey Cook earned her second straight MOP honor after bettering Kara Kaufmann, 75-74.5. Sarah Orsak toppled Deanna Green, 72-71, before Avery Ellis finished the half by downing Taylor Searles, 74-67.
Auburn rallied back in the second half by winning Equitation on the Flat, 3-1, to keep the score within two. Chenelle recorded the lone point for the Aggies with a 74-65 victory over Caitlin Creel.
In the Western Arena, Haley Franc tallied Texas A&M's solo victory in Reining, defeating Betsy Brown, 66.5-0. After the Tigers reeled off three straight points to tie the meet 9-9, Darby Gardner matched Alexa Rivard in the final ride of the day with a 70.5 to force a tiebreaker. The Aggies came out ahead, 1520-1335.5.
