COLLEGE STATION – The No. 12 Texas A&M women's tennis team kick off their final weekend of regular season home SEC matches on Friday against No. 4 South Carolina at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center at 5 p.m. (CT). The Aggies (18-3, 6-2) are looking to win their fifth straight match as they face off against the Gamecocks (12-3, 7-1) Friday.
"Tomorrow night is another great opportunity for us having a top ranked team in South Carolina on our home courts," Texas A&M women's tennis head coach Mark Weaver said. "Both of us have had great season thus far and it should be a high level match. This should be a fun one to watch for all tennis enthusiasts. We hope to get a great crowd out of the 12th Man and we look forward to the challenge of another SEC battle tomorrow evening."
In their last four matches, the Aggies have defeated then-No. 4 Vanderbilt, then-No. 21 Kentucky, Missouri and Arkansas. The Aggies were spurred to victory behind the impressive play from No. 50 Katya Townsend, for her efforts she was tabbed as the SEC Player of the Week two weeks ago after earning the highest ranked win by a freshman in program history. This past week, freshman Renee McBryde went 2-0 in singles and doubles matches to earn SEC Freshman of the Week honors.
A&M has posted an astonishing 86-22 singles record and 35-12 doubles mark in dual matches this spring. The depth on the A&M roster is unparalleled in the league, the Aggies are the only team in the SEC that has seven players with at least 10 dual wins, the next closest is Kentucky with six players with double digit victories.
Texas A&M is by far the youngest team in the country with five freshman and three sophomores. The freshman class was ranked as the No. 2 recruiting class last spring, the Aggies were one of only two schools to sign multiple blue chip recruits signing three vs Stanford's two.
All three of A&M's doubles teams are ranked nationally, one of only three teams in the country to have all three of their doubles teams ranked. Highlighted by the No. 1 doubles team of Jayci Goldsmith and Tatiana Makarova, ranked No. 63, the duo have gone 12-5 on the top doubles court. A&M's pair of Townsend and McBryde moved to No. 55 after going 3-0 against ranked pairs this spring.
A&M Sophomore Riley McQuaid has been nearly unbeatable this spring, going 16-1 in dual matches and a perfect 5-0 in league play. McQuaid's 16 dual wins leads the SEC.
Following the match up against the Gamecocks, the Aggies host their final match of the regular season at Mitchell Tennis Center against Florida on Sunday at noon (CT).
