Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex • Gainesville, Florida
GAINESVILLE – The No. 11 Texas A&M men's tennis team opens SEC Tournament play against No. 22 South Carolina Friday at 7 a.m. at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex. The Aggies (20-6) and Gamecocks (16-8) are set to face off on the back courts of the Ring Tennis Complex without lives stats or video available.
Friday's match was moved up an hour in order to get the match played prior to weather that is forecasted to roll through Gainesville on Friday.
"South Carolina is always very well coached and prepared so we will have a battle on our hands," Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. "[Paul] Jubb is one of the most improved players in the country being solidly in the top-ten. We had a tussle with them last time at their place and this match will be no different. Because of weather, we will play at 8 am local time so we will need to be internally motivated and get off to a fast start."
The Maroon & White return to action after topping Ole Miss to wrap up the regular season and secure third-place in the SEC standings. A&M earned a top-four seed in the SEC Tournament for the sixth straight year and the Aggies have beaten or equaled their pre-season prediction by the league coaches for the seventh straight season. The Aggies have advanced to the SEC Semifinals in every tournament that they have participated in since joining the league for the 2013 season.
Sunday's win was A&M's 20th of the season, the Aggies have won at least 20 matches in each of the last six seasons under Denton's instruction and eight times in his 12-year tenure. Five times during the last decade, Texas A&M has hit the 25-win mark, winning 25 in 2010, 29 in 2011, 25 in 2014, 27 in 2016 and 26 in 2018.
A&M and South Carolina have matched up 14 times on the tennis courts, the Aggies have won 11 matchups in the series. Earlier this season the Aggies topped the the-No. 18 Gamecocks 5-2 in Columbia. After picking up the doubles point to open the match, Hady Habib, Valentin Vacherot, Barnaby Smith and Austin Abbrat earned singles wins.
The winner of Friday's match will take on the winner of the No. 6 Mississippi State and Vanderbilt match on Saturday in the semifinals.
