NORMAN, Okla. – No. 25 Texas A&M women's tennis looks to bounce back from their first defeat of the season Sunday at noon against Oklahoma at the Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion.
"It is time for us to regroup from a tough 4-3 loss and get back to playing at the level that we are capable of as a group," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "It will definitely be helpful having just played a good quality indoor opponent and that experience will help us in how we approach yet another indoor match with Oklahoma. The match will be televised on Fox Sports Oklahoma and that will be some added excitement to an already great matchup with the Sooners."
The Maroon & White nearly rallied from a 3-0 deficit on Thursday against Illinois, but fell 4-3 on the road. Facing defeat, A&M freshman Renee McBryde turned in a straight set win to start the swing of momentum into the Aggies favor. Aggie freshman, Katya Townsend, turned around the match on court one to win in three-sets. With the final two matches into the third set, Illinois clinched the win on court two followed by a gritty three-set win by Riley McQuaid on court five to secure her 12th straight victory.
Sunday's matchup will be the 27th matchup between the Aggies and Sooners on the court, A&M holds a 21-5 advantage in the all-time series winning 16 of the last 17 matchups. The Aggies claimed a 4-3 win in the last showdown between the two schools in the 2012 regular season finale in Norman.
A&M has posted a 44-7 singles record and 17-4 doubles mark in dual matches this spring. McQuaid paces the team with a 12 match win streak while sophomore Dorthea Faa-Hviding and freshman Jessica Anzo have each won their last four matches. The Maroon & White are an impressive 9-0 on court five in singles and are 6-0 in doubles action on court two.
Jayci Goldsmith, a freshman from Dripping Springs, TX, earned the highest ranking for the Aggies in the Jan. 30 edition of the Oracle/ITA Division I National Singles Rankings. The lefthander jumped 21 spots to No. 89 as she stands at 8-1 this spring and 17-3 overall. A&M's Tatiana Makarova, a sophomore from Moscow, is 11-3 on the year and 5-1 in dual matches to rank 109th. Makarova and Goldsmith are the lone ranked doubles team for the Aggies, entering the rankings at No. 54.
After taking on the Sooners, the Aggies return home for a four-match home stand beginning with a double header against UTRGV and Abilene Christian on Feb. 23.
